Extension new building occupational education center for Technics III "Richard-Hartmann-School", Chemnitz
Reconstruction and rehabilitation of existing buildings and extension of new vocational school for Technology III "Richard-Hartmann-School", Chemnitz.
The Richard-Hartmann-School is on the Annaberger Street 186 in Chemnitz. The narrow estate cut with few clearance for displacement areas on own ground - due to the parallel railway line of the "Deutsche Bundesbahn" on the west side - leads to a long and extended 4-storey structure separated into using classes with cantilever installation in the last floors for the class rooms.
The class rooms are orientated to the west and obtain sunscreen fins with integrated photovoltaic at the upstream inclined steel structures. As noise buffer to the busy road Annaberger Street, corridor zones and adjoining rooms are up streamed to the rooms.
Architectural and functional concept
The new building extends the Richard-Hartmann-School by 11 class rooms, 6 Computer laboratories for informatics - data processing, CAD, CNC and language laboratory, 10 Laboratories and workshops as well as a gym with its adjoining rooms and separate entrance. A new break hall is a connecting link between old building and new building. The break room will be allocated to the fire compartment of the old building and connects the old and new buildings on the ground and first floor. For special events, the hall can be disconnected of the schooling. The rehabilitation of the old building complex covers the relocation with modernization of rooms in succession of the hall connection as well as a handicapped accessible exploitation of the 6-storey old building complex with improvement of the escape route situation.
For the overall project, it was necessary to develop a design concept, which defines a definite point of reference as orientation in the overall complex. The new building will be covered completely by the main exploitation of the old building complex.
The solution is the central break hall, where all main entrances proximate to. A new meeting point including a small bistro with seating arose creating a friendly and bright entrance atmosphere in the previously gloomy old building.
The inner corridor on the first upper floor obtained natural light through a glass roof and exposed on its small galleries in addition to the ground floor corridor zone., thereby creating a bright and spacious atmosphere. In the 2nd and 3rd upper floors are the corridors with large-scale glassing on the outside wall to Annaberger Street.
The extension is a combined frame- and masonry construction with solid reinforced concrete ceiling and braced exposed concrete shear walls.
