The redevelopment of a former convenience shopping center of DDR-period (German Democratic Republic) was the issue of an architectural competition of the city savings bank Chemnitz. Our architects could win this competition with the idea to create a savings bank passage including savings bank store, gastronomy and commerce. In addition to that our architects added an extra optical flat in shape of a floating ellipsis with a tower-like skylight over the shopping passage. The building gets a new appearance without losing its basic character. In the interior of the building nothing reminds of the former use as a part of a convenience center. Because of the extra inner development with the core of the savings bank passage the impression of a venue situation is created. The materials are modern and correspond to the new utilization.
